I’m not sure the term “biojournalism” existed before a certain hike up the side of Mt. Pisgah in Eugene, Oregon. Kallen was attempting to define difficult concepts — such as life goals — and we stumbled across this word as the answer. Biojournalism. The concept of reporting about Biology or, if you are looking at root words rather than the mash-up, biology and life modifying journalism. Either one works for us.

In reality, it turns out that three things occured. First, biojournalism turns up very few links on a Google search: 99 just prior to blog publishing. Second, the word biojournalism sounds cool and makes sense. Given that only 99 entries came back on a Google search we realized that we had essentially coined a new term — or at least latched onto a really obscure one. Third, given that it was a cool word, obscure, and new I rushed to my domain registrar of choice and to my suprise, I find out that biojournalism.com is available. What are the odds?

A real definition for biojournalism hasn’t been developed yet. Our Office of New Words has been assigned to the task and is currently lining out subcommittees to decide how to work on the problem. If you’ve got suggestions, let us know!

Update:

On 4/4/2008, almost 2 months after  the blog was launched, Google returns 440 entries on a search for “Biojournalism”
